Some 118 projects by undergraduate communication students received a host of prizes at the 28th Young Communicators’ Competition organized by the Aydın Doğan Foundation (ADV) at the Cibali campus of Kadir Has Universty in Istanbul on Feb. 21.

Akdeniz University in the Mediterranean province of Antalya, Erciyes University in the Central Anatolian province of Kayseri and Kocaeli Unviersity in the Marmara province of Kocaeli jointly topped the list of prize winners.

Some 1,295 students from 37 universities participated in the competition with 772 different projects in a host of fields, including written news, research and investigation, interview, documentary, photography, advertisement, public relations and social media projects.

ADV Honorary Deputy Chair Sema Doğan, Doğan Online Chairwoman Hanzade Doğan Boyner, ADV Executive Council Chairwoman Candan Fetvacı and several executives from Doğan Holding also attended the ceremony.
Boyner noted how technology and digitalization had resulted in changes in communication and people’s lives in her opening speech.

“I am saying in my capacity as the founder of Turkey’s leading technology companies such as Doğan Online and Hepsiburada.com that the opportunities presented by technology are inarguable. Individuals have become stronger, borders have been lifted, access to information has become easier and information has been increased in the world which is going digital. These achievements are very valuable,” she said.

Boyner also cautioned everyone to exercise vigilance against the spread of “post-truth.”

“The effect of virtual reality on communities brings risks. The styles of work among communication professionals has changed. But the essence of the matter is still the same. This essence is formed by sincerity and reality,” she said.

Sedat Ergin, editor-in-chief of daily Hürriyet; Fikret Ercan, the publications coordinator of Hürriyet; Doğan Hızlan, Hürriyet’s publishing consultant; and Erdoğan Aktaş, the head of broadcaster CNN Türk, also attended the event.
