A worker was killed at a construction site in the southern province of Adana after falling from a service elevator while carrying bricks to the sixth floor on Oct. 29.The 50-year-old worker, identified as Ömer Sönmez, lost his balance while trying to reach the elevator and hung in the air for a short time after he managed to grab the edge of elevator. Sönmez then fell to the floor after he could no longer hold on, dropping before his colleagues were able to help him.
Sönmez was heavily injured after falling onto a pile of bricks, and succumbed to his injuries before reaching hospital, despite first aid from the paramedics who were dispatched to the site.
A public prosecutor has examined the construction site and an expert report is also set to be prepared to determine whether there was any negligence in the accident.
The law regarding work safety, which was announced in the Official Gazette on July 23, requires that service elevators set outside of construction zones should be surrounded by covers at least three-meter-high. It also requires the side with the door to be covered at the same level as the other sides.
