UNESCO to organize events for four Turks
PARIS - Anatolia News Agency
The Paris-based United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will internationally commemorate Turkish composer Itri and poet Nabi on the 300th anniversary of their deaths and architect and city planner Kemal Ahmet Aru on the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Turkey will support the commemoration events of these three people in 2012 and 2013. The UNESCO commemoration decision was made during its 36th general committee.
Events commemorating the 500th anniversary of the making of the Piri Reis Map will be part of the events. The map of Piri Reis has been defined as a “selected piece of the world’s memory” and the high level that Nabi has reached in philosophy, lyricism and satire was highlighted in the decision.
One of the best
The UNESCO decision also defined Itri as one of the best representatives of Turkish music and Aru as a very good reference for the world’s architects and city planners.
Upon the proposal of Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry, UNESCO also decided in previous years to join the commemoration activities organized for selected personalities like Atatürk, Yunus Emre, Mevlana, Nazım Hikmet, Katip Çelebi and Evliya Çelebi.
