UK retail sales rise 0.9 percent in April

Sales climbed 0.9 percent from March, the Office for National Statistics said yesterday. Economists predicted a 0.5 percent increase, the median of 26 forecasts in a Bloomberg News survey shows. Sales rose 2.6 percent from a year earlier. The British economy shrank 1.9 percent in the first quarter.
