UK joblessness at 8.4 pct
LONDON - Associated Press
Official UK employment data shows that Britain’s unemployment rate rose to 8.4 percent in the three months from November 2011 through January 2012, up from 8.3 percent in the previous three months of 2011.The Office for National Statistics said the figure released yesterday matches the highest level of joblessness reported since 1995.
Unemployment has risen as Britain slowly recovers from a deep, 18-month recession, which ended in the last quarter of 2009.
A month ago, the agency reported that the unemployment rate in the October-December period was also 8.4 percent, indicating that there has not been a pick-up in employment.
