An Israeli army officer and a soldier were lightly wounded in an exchange of fire with Palestinian militants across the Gaza border today, a military spokeswoman told AFP."Palestinians opened fire at an Israeli soldier and an officer adjacent to the security fence in the central Gaza Strip," she said. "The two were injured and evacuated for further treatment." The spokeswoman said both were lightly wounded, and that the Israelis had returned fire.
Palestinian security sources said they were unaware of the incident.
The Israeli military maintains an exclusion zone just inside the Gaza border that is off-limited to Palestinians, and troops regularly carry out military activity in the area.
