At least two students were killed and 43 were wounded when a shuttle carrying students plunged from a highway in the Central Anatolian province of Konya early on Jan. 6, Doğan News Agency has reported.

The accident took place on a highway between the district of Cihanbeyli and Konya near the Directorate of Meteorology building at 8:00 a.m.

The bus veered off the road after it lost control due to icing on the road. It carried students from a medical vocational high school.

Scores of ambulances and police arrived at the scene following the incident.

Burak Demirci and Ayşenur Okuş, both aged 17, were killed after they were trapped under the bus. Their bodies were taken out of the wreckage with the help of heavy construction equipment.

Some 43 people, including the bus driver, were taken to the Cihanbeyli State Hospital, where four wounded students reportedly remain in critical condition.

An investigation has been launched to determine whether the passengers had worn their seatbelts.
