Turkish sex worker rents house for cats after brothel fires them

Mürvet Taşvur was one of three sex workers who was fired from the Edirne brothel for feeding more than 30 street animals in the apartment inside the complex after complaints filed by some of their colleagues.
After suing the owners of the brothel over discrimination, Taşvur saved 20 of her cats from the complex, but the remaining 10 were left inside.
Taşvur told Demirören News Agency on Nov. 8 that she rented a house inside the complex and also hired a caretaker to feed the 10 cats there.
“I am paying 400 Turkish Liras for rent and I am also paying the wage of the caretaker,” she said, noting that she spent all her income on the cats.
Meanwhile, Taşvur’s legal case against the brothel is proceeding.
Prostitution in officially registered brothels, known as “general houses,” is legal in Turkey.
Under health laws dealing with sexually transmitted infections, the state’s regulatory agencies issue identity cards to sex workers that give them rights to some free medical care services and other social services.
Illegal prostitution, on the other hand, is classified as operating a brothel without a license or being a sex worker without having health check-ups or a license, which are punishable with one year in prison.
There are also heavy jail sentences for human trafficking and related crimes.
