Turkish police forces are conducting a search at 20 locations around Ankara, including the headquarters of the Turkish Gendarmerie Forces and several other military garrisons, as part of a military espionage probe. The searches are being conducted within the framework of an investigation launched in İzmir in May into allegations that secret military documents were acquired through blackmail.
A specially authorized prosecutor in İzmir ordered simultaneous raids today in 16 provinces. Seven public prosecutors are supervising the operation in Ankara, where police forces are conducting a search at the general command of the Turkish Gendarmerie Forces.
Detention orders have been issued for 51 people – including active-duty soldiers – as part of the raids, reports said, adding that detained suspects would be taken to İzmir.
Forty-five suspects, including 13 active-duty soldiers, are already under arrest in the ongoing investigation.
