Turkish media veteran Erol Simavi, the son of the founder of daily Hürriyet, Sedat Simavi, has died at 85 in Monaco.

His body will be brought to Turkey on June 10 for his funeral ceremony.

Erol Simavi, who had long lived abroad, acceded to the management of Hürriyet with his brother, Haldun Simavi, after their father died. He assumed the top management post at the daily after Haldun Simavi quit, founding a printing house named Web Ofset.

Simavi had spear-headed the introduction of Hürriyet supplements such as Kelebek, an entertainment edition, and Hafta Sonu, a weekend edition.

Simavi moved to Switzerland with his wife Belma Simavi in 1993 and withdrew from the media sector, selling the majority shares of Hürriyet in 1994.
