Fishermen recently caught a piranha in the River Maritza in the Thracian province of Edirne, Anatolian news agency reported today.
The fish, which was 45 centimeters long, might have been left in the river by someone who had previously kept the fish in an aquarium since such a species does not naturally live in Turkey, according to the fishermen.
The fisherman also suspected that more piranhas might be in the river due to their procreation rate.
"If the number of these fish has increased in the river, they could attack humans in addition to other fish when they are starved," one of the fishermen said.
