The Adana court formally charged 38-year-old Murat Yuksel, who asserted his constitutional right to remain silence, news agencies reported.

Yuksel confessed Tuesday to killing his parents, sister, brother and sister-in-law, and three nephews, after police discovered the eight family members shot dead in an apartment, officials said.

The charged man, who is believed to have psychological problems, was detained within hours of the discovery of the bodies with what was believed to be the murder weapon, according to reports.

There are claims being made that Yuksel may attempt to commit suicide while in prison, the state-run Anatolian Agency said following reports of his formal arrest.

He was picked up at his home by investigating police officers while writing a suicide note.

Yuksel also reportedly attempted to commit suicide three months earlier by setting himself and his car alight, and was discharged from the army, where he served as a petty officer, after it was discovered that he was married to a foreign national.

The motive for the killings was being investigated; however, media reports have suggested the murder was the result of a disagreement within the family over some financial issues.
