Turkish lender Denizbank has filed a complaint to have a website registered in its name with a ".xxx" URL extension removed, CNNTürk reported today.
The ".xxx" URL ending was introduced in 2011 to catalogue pornographic websites under a separate extension but has caused problems for corporations and institutions that had nothing to do with the porn industry.
Denizbank filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to have the ".xxx" site removed, becoming the 17th institution to file such a complaint, along with 20th Century Fox, Sterling Jewelers and oil giant Valero Energy.
Other Turkish companies who filed complaints with WIPO were Finansbank, Borçelik and Borusan.
It took an average of two months for WIPO to follow through the applications and shut down extensions violating property rights, the report said.
Kansas University reportedly spent around $3,000 to purchase numerous variations of its name ending with ".xxx" in an effort to prevent possible abuses.
