Turkish artists call for support for Yazidi refugees in new video campaign

Popular actress Meltem Cumbul was among the many prominent names to lend their voice to the campaign in support of the Yazidi refugees.

Several Turkish artists have lent their voice to a new campaign in support of the thousands of Yazidi refugees who have taken shelter in Turkey after fleeing massacres committed by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Sinjar (Şengal).

The video shared via YouTube and social media particularly aims to create awareness on showing tolerance to Yazidis, who believe in an ancient religion that the Sunni Muslim radicals consider heretical.

The campaign, which runs with the slogan “Give voice to Şengal,” has been organized by the Coordination of Solidarity from Şengal to Gaza.

The 35 artists who joined the campaign include actresses Şebnem Sönmez, Meltem Cumbul and Nur Sürer, actors Orhan Alkaya and Engin Günaydın and singer Şevval Sam.

The number of Yazidis in Turkey now exceeds 30,000, while many are also in camps in the Kurdish autonomic region of Iraq.
