Turkey's Changemakers: Daddy, tell me a story
Nurten Akkuş became the third Changemaker of the seventh season of the Sabancı Foundation Turkey’s Changemakers Program, which shares “the extraordinary stories of unique people” who contribute to social development.
Akkuş has been working as the manager of the Ayvacık Central Kindergarten for seven years. As part of the “Daddy, tell me a story” project, she provided training to fathers whose children go to kindergarten. First, she started the project with just parent and then involved dozens of fathers living in the neighborhood in the process. She gave them seminars on father-child relationships.
As part of the project, every father whose child goes to kindergarten comes to school at least once according to a certain agenda. Fathers tell stories to children, and then they present a theater play together.
Akkuş’s “Daddy, tell me a story” project is now being implemented in 20 different cities across Turkey. With this project, hundreds of fathers have received training.
Akkuş set out believing that there can be a better future for kids. She brought together fathers and their children with an event that seems very simple, but she made a big difference in the world of fathers, as well as in the future of children.
