Turkish economy minister Nihat Zeybekci has said the country will put additional import taxes on electronic goods in the upcoming days.

“We’ll take special measures in additional customs duties in the next month. New additional import taxes will be put on electric and electronic goods, including mobile phones and tablet computers,” he said at a press meeting in Ankara July 2.

Sector representatives expect price hikes on these products after the additional taxes are levied.

“In addition to these goods, we are also working on chemical goods,” he added.

Zeybekci noted that the economy grew by 2.3 percent in the first quarter mainly upon consumer spending, with the economy administration expecting higher growth rates in the second quarter.

“The growth will be based on domestic demand this year. Turkey will be making no headway if it grows at a rate lower than 5 percent,” he said, adding that an aggressive rate hike policy is not expected from the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) this year.
