Turkish authorities have detained and deported a 15-year-old Swedish girl before she crossed the Turkish-Syrian border, allegedly aiming to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).Fredrik Malm, a Swedish police chief, told Swedish media that the girl’s family had informed police of her disappearance at the last minute. Swedish police informed Turkish authorities and the girl was detained.
Malm said the girl has been deported from Turkey and is now back with her family in Sweden.
Turkey shares an 800-km long border with Syria, and Turkish authorities have in recent months strengthened cooperation with other countries to stop the flow of foreign fighters to Syria and Iraq.
