Traffic congestion costs Istanbul more than 5 billion Turkish Liras per year due to loss of labor and excess fuel consumption, according to Kasım Kutlu, the general manager of the Istanbul Municipality-affiliated Intelligent Transportation Systems (İSBAK).The ratio of mass transportation usage is 70 percent in Turkey’s most populous city, Kasım Kutlu said.
Of the total motorized transportation in Istanbul, 29 percent are automobiles and taxis, 63 percent public and service buses and 7 percent rail systems and sea transportation, Kutlu added.
