Thalassa stages rebetiko concert in Turkish capital

The Rebetiko wants to contribute to Turkish-Greek relations on the stage.
Rebetiko group Thalassa staged a rebetiko and kritiko (Cretan music) concert at the Ankara University’s Language, History and Geography faculty to a jam-packed audience on Dec. 11.The group wants to contribute to Turkish-Greek friendship through such events, group member Aysun Aytimur said during the show.
Thalassa, which will publish its first CD toward the end of the year, includes Görkem Aytimur on guitar and vocals; Aysun Aytimur on vocals; Hakan Kutlu on bouzouki; Ozan Belge on accordion and keyboard; Gerçek Dorman on percussions; Sabri Çapanoğlu on bass; Mustafa Fındık on oud and violin and Hürriyet Daily News correspondent Ümit Enginsoy on mandolin.
Rebetiko is usually considered the music of Greek immigrants that emigrated from Turkey to Greece in the early 20th century. Kritiko is also considered a branch of rebetiko.
Ankara University’s rector, Erkan Ibis, was also present at the concert.
