A white stork, which was freed in Slovakia after a GPS tracker was attached to it, has died in the southern province of Mersin.Turkish officials said the animal was shot with a gun by hunters.
People who saw the wounded stork in an irrigation channel in the Mezitli district’s Davultepe neighborhood informed the fire department. Workers rescued the bird, which had a severely broken leg.
Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Veterinary teams first treated the stork, which was then taken to the Tarsus Zoo, but it died despite all efforts.
Examinations revealed that in 2012 Slovakian and Hungarian scientists had attached a GPS tracker to the stork and set it free. It traveled 2,600 kilometers before it was shot.
