A specialized sergeant was killed in clashes with suspected outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members on Düğün Mountain in the southeastern province of Şırnak’s Uludere district, daily Hürriyet reported today.
The militants opened fire on soldiers in the night as security forces were conducting operations along the border with Iraq, killing Sgt. Kemal Akay.
Security forces returned fire, and clashes continued for a couple hours. Soldiers on the mountain are being reinforced by additional troops, helicopters and artillery, the report said.
A ceremony was held for Akay by gendarmerie command in Şırnak before his remains were shipped to his hometown of Malatya.
