May Day in Istanbul was largely marked by a police crackdown, tear gas and water cannon, but there was time for more levity during festive celebrations in Ankara, partially thanks to a veteran simit vendor who entertained the crowd with a unique dance, his very own “simit shake.”Without removing his load of the traditional Turkish food – a symbol of the worker and the poor – from his head, the simit vendor managed to entertain the crowd with a dance as if he wasn’t balancing around five kilograms of the neatly stacked pastry on his head. The vendor even bent down at one point while continuing his colorful dancing, doing so without dropping any simit on the ground.
It remains to be seen whether the simit seller’s dance will create a buzz online, but his agile moves were cheered and applauded enthusiastically by the Workers’ Day revelers.
