A rocket-propelled grenade attack, believed to have targeted a police headquarters, was carried out on late June 22 in the central part of the Bayındır district in the western province of İzmir.Three rocket shots were fired from a high point in the district, with one of them hitting an area between the district’s public hospital and police headquarters and the two others hitting the roof of a depot and a house under construction. While the attack did not lead to any casualties, police started a wide-scale operation, supported from the air by a helicopter, to catch the attackers.
A similar attack by outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) militants was carried out in February in İzmir’s Kemalpaşa district, targeting a gendarmerie station. No causalities were reported during the attack.
