A Turkish ro-ro ship and a ferry boat will begin trips between Turkey’s southern port of Mersin and Lebanon’s Tripoli port later this month, according to officials. The ships belong to two private Turkish maritime firms and will carry motor cars and passengers.
The Turkish companies’ decision to begin the trips came after the governments of Turkey and Lebanon recently launched discussions about alternative transport routes due to the violence in Syria, which has made overland transport through the Arab republic nearly impossible.
The Fergün Company’s ferry boat “Azzurra” will make its first journey from Mersin to Lebanon on June 11. The “Azzurra” has a passenger capacity of 700 and can accommodate up to 170 automobiles, 25 trucks and 18 semi-trailer trucks.Akgün Company’s ro-ro ship “Mersin Ro-Ro” will travel from Mersin to Lebanon once a week and will carry semi-trailer trucks and passengers.
