The beginning of the Gallipoli Wars on March 18, 1915, when British and French allied ships tried to force their fleets through the Çanakkale straits, is marked annually as Commemorating Martyrs Day and the office of the Chief of General Staff has prepared special commemorative posters.
Ceremonies marking the day will be held around the country, with the main event at the Gallipoli Memorial in Çanakkale province. Turkey marks the beginning of the campaign as Martyrs' Day while Australia and New Zealand remember the land assault on April 24 as Anzac Day.
