Rare goat spotted in eastern Turkey
TUNCELİ – Anadolu Agency
A rare breed of mountain goat was spotted in the highlands of the Pülümür district of Turkey’s eastern province of Tunceli on May 26.“Hook-horned mountain goats called Chamois are a species that has been taken under protection by the Forestry and Water Affairs Ministry. But compared to chevrotains, they are spotted rarely in our province,” said Nature Preservation and National Parks Branch head Ali Haydar Gürsönmez.
“It is possible to spot chevrotains in almost all districts [of Tunceli] but Chamois are only rarely spotted. They are seen only in one or two regions in our province and are less broadly distributed,” Gürsönmez added.
He also said work was carried out to protect the species and there is a 15,000 Turkish Lira penalty per animal for their hunters.
