President Gül to pay last foreign visit to Turkish Cyprus

President Abdullah Gül will make his last official foreign visit to Turkish Cyprus on July 20.

Gül will participate by on the island to mark the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Turkish Peace and Freedom Day.

Turkish Cyprus was the president’s first destination of choice after he was elected in 2007.

His visit comes at a time when reunification talks between Greek and Turkish Cyprus are accelerating.

Last week, the Turkish Cypriots submitted a five-step road map on future negotiations for the Greek Cypriot side to evaluate. A “transition period” as well as the opening of three borders in divided capital Nicosia is now on the agenda for discussion.
