PKK militants kill police officer in Turkey’s east

Outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants have shot dead a police officer in an ambush in the eastern province of Iğdır.Olgun Kurbanoğlu, 45, walked toward a military post in the Karakoyunlu district at around 8 a.m. in the morning after a child informed him of “two suspects” in the area. PKK militants, hiding in the fields, began to fire their automatic rifles as Kurbanoğlu arrived at the scene. He responded to the fire and wounded one militant. However, Kurbanoğlu was badly wounded in the head and chest.
After hearing the gunfire, colleagues immediately took Kurbanoğlu to Iğdır State Hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Security forces have begun an operation to apprehend the militants.
