Several thousands of women gathered around Istanbul's iconic İstiklal Avenue to attend the 17th Feminist Night March organized by feminist and women's rights groups.

However, Istanbul police had already set up a check point between the Taksim Square and the French Institute on Istiklal Avenue in the afternoon.

In the evening, people trying to walk into İstiklal Avenue were stopped by a police blockade.

Access to the avenue from other streets was cut, effectively emptying the touristic walking trail. After negotiations, police allowed only women to walk into the avenue from Taksim Square.

After peaceful chants and musical shows of about an hour, police used tear gas to disperse the crowd around the French Institute, a regular meeting point standing at the entrance of Istiklal Avenue near the Taksim Square.

Some women reacted to police officers, complaining that a night march has been held on the International Women's Day for many years.

But the police was determined to disperse the remaining groups after many of attendees had already left the area or flocked to the pubs.
