‘We will give a lesson to West on elections,’ Erdoğan says
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has invited his supporters to “give a lesson to the West” on the June 24 elections. Click through for the full story in photos...
Erdoğan addressed hundreds of thousands supporters at the Yenikapı Square during the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) “Great Istanbul Rally” on June 17.
“The West is looking for the June 24 elections. What are they waiting for? They are waiting to see how Erdoğan will fall down. Are you ready to give a lesson to the West?” Erdoğan asked his supporters.
“You have always given that lesson up to this day. I believe in you. God willing, you will give them another lesson,” he added.
A week before the presidential and general elections, Erdoğan continued to slam main opposition Republican’s People Party (CHP) candidate Muharrem İnce, while refraining to mention his other four opponents.
“[İnce], look, you are talking about corruption. Know your place! We have invested so much in Istanbul. Don’t you see these investments? Are you blind?” he said.
Beside investments, Erdoğan also claimed that the opposition candidates lack a coherent strategy to fight against terrorism.
The surprise of the AKP’s Yenikapı rally, on the other hand, was the appearance of former Prime Minister Tansu Çiller.
The first female prime minister of Turkey told journalists during the rally that she “came with a national consciousness.”
“Freedoms are not possible without security. Our soldiers write history with serious successes against terrorism recently. I have to say this as a former prime minister who had vowed to finish terrorism,” Çiller said, adding that the opposition “formed an alliance, but they are still divided because they have different goals and political cultures.”
