‘Turks protect their cars, not lives,’ expert reacts amid hail storm
A Turkish meteorology and disaster relief expert has criticized thousands of Istanbul residents who took precautions to protect their cars but failed to heed other warnings about extreme weather, as Turkey’s largest city braced for torrential rain and hail storms on June 26. Professor Mikdat Kadıoğlu noted in a tweet late on June 25 that people only heeded warnings about the hail storm and took precautions to protect their cars.
“What a nation we are! I am warning about torrential rains, hail storm, lightning and tornados but people only care about the hail storm. They may die in a flood or be hit by lightning or a tornado but they don’t care about their own lives. Their cars are more important! Damn your cars, OK?” Kadıoğlu said.
Local news agencies had published photos and videos of Turks who moved their cars in closed areas or covered them with protective sheets, some using even beds, to minimize the harm of the upcoming hail storm.
Some 150,000 vehicles were damaged by heavy hail in Istanbul in July last year.
The hail storm expected to fall on Istanbul on June 26 did not arrive, however the western provinces were seen to have been impacted.
By around 5 p.m., the western province of Tekirdağ began getting impacted by severe weather conditions.
