The drill, named after Caner Gönyeli, a Turkish Cypriot officer who was killed during Turkey’s military intervention in Cyprus in 1974, was launched in June 19 and continued for two days.
Turkish frigate TCG Kemalreis and corvettes TCSG Güven and TCSG Yaşam joined the exercise alongside a number of coast guards, helicopters, airplanes and paratroopers.
Naval forces and search-and-rescue teams from Turkish Cyprus also participated in the drill.
There were three scenarios played in the drill. The first one was based on rescuing the crew and passengers from an aircraft that crash-landed on the ground.
The second mission was about rescuing the crew of a moving ship on fire, while the third one was about saving ship-wrecked migrants from the sea.
Rear Admiral Bülent Olcay, the deputy commander of the Turkish Coast Guard, announced on June 21 that the drill was “successfully completed.”
“We will continue to support Turkish Cyprus’ capacity in search-and-rescue operations, while ramping up cooperation,” he added, according to Doğan News Agency.
