Top 5 weekend activities in Istanbul
Istanbul presents unique experiences for those who want to escape from the intense week day into the weekend in the world’s only intercontinental city. Click through for the top five suggestions from Hürriyet Travel... (Photos: Alamy)
1- Entering an auction in Balat: The historic Balat district hear the shores of the Golden Horn have a Sunday market for garage sales. You can enter an auction and buy an old object with a story in the beautiful, run-down streets of Balat.
2- Follow the hero: There are thousands of fictional works that you can find something about Istanbul. Pick a novel or perhaps a Turkish TV series and visit Istanbul districts that they went. How about putting yourself in the shoes of James Bond in From Russia With Love?
3- Locals vs. tourists: If you are a local, go and spend some time with tourists or vice versa. The Çorlulu Ali Paşa Madrasah, an Ottoman-era religious school-turned cafe in Beyazıt neighborhood, is the perfect place to do it.
4- New tastes: Instead of newer, excessively commercialized places, you can try testing new tastes in older, well-established restaurants like Pandeli, Yanyalı Fehmi, Filibe Köftecisi and Baylan Bakery.
5- Taking the Hills: Like its sisters Rome and Moscow, Istanbul is said to be built on seven hills. You can pick one of them and enjoy the great view of the great city. One option is the Mihrabat Grove in the Beykoz district on Istanbul’s Asian side, where famous Turkish poet Yahya Kemal Beyatlı wrote the poem, “From Another Hill”, which goes: I looked at you from another hill, dear Istanbul!
