Istanbul's historic shoe factory now a movie set, cinema
The Beykoz Kundura in the Beykoz district of Istanbul's Asian side includes a number of historic buildings, some of them dating back to the early Ottoman industrial age. The old buildings now serve as movie sets and a cinema.
The Beykoz Shoe Factory, which was formerly owned by state-owned Sümerbank, a was founded in the early years of the Republic of Turkey to incentivize the textile industry. The factory’s main buildings were designed by Czech architects in the 1950s. It is in a wooded area overlooking the Bosphorus.
Beside “Resurrection,” which tells the story of the founding of the Ottoman Empire, several Turkish TV series are filmed on the property, which is currently marketed as a filming plateau for historical dramas, as well as a venue for special events.
Öyle Bir Geçer Zaman Ki (Time Goes By), Karadayı (The Uncle in Black), Suskunlar (Game of Silence) and Umuda Kelepçe Vurulmaz (Hope Cannot be Handcuffed) are some popular TV series partly shot in or near the Beykoz Shoe Factory.
The property, owned by Yıldırım Holding, was hit by a fire in the summer of 2018.
