Irish man hospitalized in Turkey after swallowing stolen ring
An Irish tourist has ended up in the hospital after he attempted to steal a diamond ring. Click through for the photos of the incident.
Ian Campbell, who was holidaying in the southwestern Turkish province of Muğla’s Marmaris district, visited a jewelry store in the town on Oct. 4, where he swallowed a ring to steal it.
The ring worth some $40,000.
The 54-year-old tourist denied any wrongdoing but security camera footage and x-ray scans confirmed the jeweler's claim.
Police took the man to a hospital where he was given food and laxatives on Oct. 4.
Campbell ate, drank, ran and jumped throughout the night, but the ring was still there as of Oct. 5.
The jeweler has been waiting with the man for more than a day. “I am waiting to get my ring back. I filed a criminal complaint. I cannot believe how calm he is,” the jeweler told journalists at the hospital, protesting the Irish man.
To give the ring back, Campbell keeps walking --never alone, but with a police escort.
When he is exhausted, he goes to a hospital room to sleep and rest.
Police say that the ring will be surgically removed if it will not come out in natural ways.
