More than 500 Syrians started to form a queue in the morning in front of the İzmir Province Migrant Directorate building in the Konak district.
According to Demirören News Agency, the queue soon turned chaotic. As some minors faced the risk of being trampled on, police forces intervened and made efforts to bring order to the line.
“Isn’t there any other place to do this work other than this street? We can’t do our business here,” a local shopkeeper told the agency.
It was not immediately clear why officials scheduled the appointments of hundreds of migrants on the same day.
There are more than 3.5 million Syrians under temporary protection in Turkey, of which over 970,000 of them are of school age, according to official figures.
A temporary protection card features the name of the province where the migrants are living in order to control migration within Turkey.
Those who have this identification card can also benefit from health and education services.
