Heavy snow blocks Ankara-Istanbul highway in Turkey
Traffic was halted on Jan. 15 for several hours on parts of the highway from Ankara to Istanbul due to heavy snow. Click through for the story in photos...
Snow started early morning and started to pile up on the highway especially in the western province of Bolu.
Police intervened after both incidents and directed the traffic to alternative secondary routes.
In some parts of the highway, several vehicles were ordered by the police to park in nearby pockets until the vehicles stuck were rescued and defrost works were completed.

The snow level on Uludağ mountain resorts has exceeded 80 centimeters.
"Some people struggled to find their parked cars," local media reported.
Snow has also paralyzed life in parts of Bursa.
Heavy snow hit the highway between Bursa and the Uludağ mountain on Dec. 25.
Dozens of citizens who were on their way for a New Year holiday were rescued.

The winter season’s first snow hit Istanbul and Ankara on Dec. 12, as the meteorological authority warned citizens of steeply dropping temperatures in several provinces.
Snow entered Istanbul from its western outskirts of Silivri, Çatalca and Beylikdüzü.
Coming from southeastern Europe, the snow turned into blizzard in some areas of Turkey’s most populous city, but did not cause any trouble affecting the daily lives of the locals.
In the Turkish capital of Ankara, the snow started in the first hours of Dec. 12 and turned into blizzard after sunrise.
Local officials in Ankara directed vehicles to more available roads as the snow triggered a number of traffic jams during the morning rush hour.
The Meteorology General Directorate said in a statement on Dec. 12 that temperatures were expected to drop as much eight degrees Celsius in the western, northern and central provinces of Turkey.
Heavy snow is expected in eastern Anatolian provinces, excluding Elazığ and Malatya, and the inner parts of the eastern Black Sea region.
On the other hand, storms bringing heavy rain and winds as strong as 70 km/h are expected in eastern Mediterranean and eastern Black Sea shores, as well as southeastern provinces.
