Five must-see ancient theatres in Turkey
As the lands of Turkey hosted numerous civilizations and empires for thousands of years, the country still carries traces of history. There are more than 50 unearthed ancient theaters in Anatolian lands, remaining from the Greek and Roman periods.
Aspendos: Home to one of the rare ancient theaters and aqueducts that have survived to this day in Antalya's Serik district, Aspendos draws attention with its architectural feature. The ancient city defies years with its glory.
Aphrodisias: The ancient city of Aphrodisias is made up mainly of two components: The archaeological site of Aphrodisias and the marble quarries. The temple of Aphrodite dates back to the 3rd century B.C. The city streets are arranged around several large civic structures, which include temples, a theater, an agora, and two bath complexes.
Pergamon: The ancient city once called Pergamon, the history of the “Upper City,” where kings and commanders live, and the “Lower City,” has an architectural style that developed with a simpler understanding for the people.
Ephesus: Ephesus takes its visitors on a historical journey dating back to 7000 BC with traces of different civilizations. Founded in the Neolithic Period, Ephesus is among the 12 cities of Ionia and has been home to different civilizations throughout the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Principalities and Ottoman periods, with the Temple of Artemis based on the ancient Anatolian Mother Goddess (Cybele) tradition. It also contains one of the seven wonders.
Hierapolis: Hierapolis, which is located in the central district of Denizli and takes its name from the goddess of the Amazons, Hiera, is one of the most visited destinations in Anatolia thanks to its pagan sites, a historic bath, walls, water channels and churches.
