Crew members of ship aground in Istanbul rescued via rope line
A dry cargo ship ran ashore on Istanbul’s northeastern coast, Demirören News Agency reported on Dec. 19.
The 127-meter long ship, named Natalia and sailing under the colors of Comor Islands, reportedly started drifting towards Riva shore in Istanbul’s Şile district due to severe weather conditions.
The captain managed to anchor and rejected offers of assistance from rescue boats in the early hours of Dec. 19.
However, shortly after the ship started sailing towards the Bosphorus it ran ashore just 0.5 miles off the shore near Sahilköy village.
No casualty, risk of sinking or environmental pollution was reported, according to a statement by the governor’s office in Istanbul.
Rescue teams arrived in the scene to get the 16 crew members out of the ship.
Some of the crew members were seen carrying a luggage while being rescued via rope line.
