Animals affected by earthquake taken under care
Many animals trapped in stables and barns damaged by the earthquake in Elazığ were rescued.
A cat that was rescued from a wreckage and adopted by firefighters while searching for his owners around the rubble of a building in Elazığ was taken to the southern province of Antalya for treatment.
Antalya Mayor Muhittin Böcek thanked the firefighter teams of the municipality and gave them a plaque. Petting the cat saved by the firefighters, Böcek said that they called the cat “Toros” (Taurus).
Veterinarian Tayfun Kazan said that the preliminary tests showed that the cat did not have respiratory problems. “There is no life-threatening problem. He has wounds in his body. We will treat him,” he added.
In Malatya’s Doğanyol district, the cow of a resident whose other animals were under the wreckage due to the earthquake was also rescued and treated by the vets of the municipality.
The veterinarians also treated a stray dog called “Aslan” (Lion) in the Gökçe village in the district, the most damaged area due to the earthquake.
“There was a problem with the animal’s intestines. Generally, this problem is a common one found in puppies related to constipation. It probably happened because of the stress caused by the earthquake,” said Mehmet Celal Aldemir, a municipal vet.
A large number of cattle and sheep died in the destroyed barns, but some cows and sheep were rescued by soldiers from the Gendarmerie Special Operations.
A cow, five-and-a-half months into its pregnancy, was one of the lucky animals. The cow, with one foot injured and cannot stand up, is being taken care of by the gendarmerie forces.
A cow rescued from under the rubble in Malatya was purchased by the AHBAP Platform, a non-governmental organization founded by Turkish singer Haluk Levent. The cow named “Afet,” which means disaster in Turkish, will be brought to the Rescued Livestock Shelter in Kemalpaşa district of İzmir after her treatment.
