Over 2,000 foreigners in jail in Turkey

ANKARA

There are a total of 1,066 convicted and 1,065 detained foreign nationals currently in Turkey’s penitentiaries, Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin stated yesterday, answering a motion submitted by main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy Veli Ağbaba. He also noted that six of these foreign convicts had been extradited based on mutual understanding.

Ergin also stated that based on tentative data on violations of the privacy of communication, some 215 public prosecutions were initiated in 2012, and that after trials, 45 people had been convicted within the same year.
