Shall we go back to the 1960 system?

Years ago, the Greek Cypriot side proposed a return to the 1960 system. In the spring of 1994, as is often the case, there was a deadlock in the Cyprus talks. When I moved from Ledra Palace barricade to the Greek part for an interview with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulidis, a new arrival in Greek Cypriot politics at the time, I had many questions in mind but I did not plan to ask questions about a return to the 1960 system.

Turkish is a very interesting and rich language. You can use an expression instead of making an explanation for hours and explain an opinion. For instance, it is possible to explain with the “Bor’s market is over, ride the donkey to Niğde” expression, that is in a few words, to tell your counterpart that refusing a compromise, wasting time with dragging feet might indeed produce a serious loss.

Although those who live like the Turkish Cypriot left or outsiders with their one eye closed – like those horses turning the rotary through walking around the well to take out some water – simply miss a key reality: The crux of the Cyprus problem. Those friends just simply cannot understand the root of the problem on the island is that one of the two societies considers itself to be the owner and “superior” of everything, and sees the other society as a group of people that it will only be willing to allow it exist as long as it accepts its minority status, as a serf of the ruling Greek element.

The images from Kabul airport were heartbreaking. It reminded us of the image of the United States fleeing Saigon in a hassle with helicopters taking off from the American Embassy. The U.S. had lost a war to the North Vietnamese, who had nothing. Photos of Kabul airport described the plight of thousands of Afghan citizens serving foreign embassies, businesses, journalists and visitors. Similarly, the photos of Afghan officers, supposedly well trained and equipped by American officers, but now have been trying to escape their homeland with their armored personnel carriers and other military vehicles, all loaded with private bundles, onto the Iranian border.

With the opening of the Varosha card in Cyprus, the preconceived approaches were broken and all the presumed landmarks were cracked. It was obvious that with a change after 47 years in the Varosha position of the Turkish Cypriot-Turkish side a hell of reactions would flare-up. Now, the move was taken, and reactions mushroomed as not only the Greek Cypriot side but also the United Nations and the European Union were confused.
