You can see why competitiveness matters more than asset prices, but the two may be related. Economics consultancy Capital Economics argues that over the past decade, countries that have made more progress on reforms, as proxied by the change in their GCI rankings, have seen stronger performance in their stock markets. Markets may not all be animal spirits, after all.
