Imagine tasting about 120 wines in four master classes and comparing your scores with those of two top wine experts. This is a challenge you can experience next weekend at St. Regis Istanbul on May 13 and 14.“Challenging MasterClasses with Oz Clarke and Caro Maurer MW” will surely be the wine event of the season.
During the two days, there will be four different Master Classes with the experts, plus walk around tastings each day, displaying about 180 top wines of leading wineries in Turkey, grouped according to their grape variety and body.
The Master Classes will be led by Master of Wine Maurer, panel chair for Mediterranean wines at the Decanter World Wine Awards, and Clarke, co-chair of International Wine Challenge and needless to say, Britain’s most popular wine writer. Each class will feature around 30 wines, blind tasted and rated. The attenders’ scores will be collected, and the result of the class participants and two experts will be announced separately. Every attender will be able to keep a carbon copy of their own scores to compare their ratings with that of Clarke and Maurer. This is a real opportunity to test your own tasting capabilities. The event will also host selected gourmet food and a range of Turkish cheeses from artisanal producers.
Known throughout the world for his phenomenal palate, irreverent style, accurate predictions and enthusiasm, Clarke is Britain’s most popular wine writer. He is the author of a collection of bestselling and award-winning wine books, including Bordeaux, for which he won the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers Award in 2009. His BBC television and radio broadcasts keep audiences captivated and entertained. The popular “Oz and James Drink to Britain,” with “Top Gear” co-presenter James May – a rollicking caravan adventure around the British Isles exploring beers, cider, whisky, wine and more – won them both and the accompanying book the International Wine Challenge Personality of the Year Award, the TRIC TV Arts/Documentary Programme of the Year Award and the Gourmand World Cookbook Award for Best Wine Literature. In 2010, Clarke was made an Officier de l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole by the French government for services to French agriculture, and he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Drinks Retailing Awards 2015. His book “The History of Wine in 100 Bottles [2015],” was winner of the “Best Wine History Book in the U.K.” at the Gourmand Drink Awards as well as second place winner in the “Wine History” category at the Gourmand World Book Awards. Grapes & Wines was winner in the U.K. for the Gourmand Drink Awards Best Drinks Education Book category in 2015.
Clarke was awarded the “English Wine Producers Communicator of the Year” trophy in July 2016. His new book “Oz Clarke: World of Wine” will publish in September 2017.
