The blinding love of Turkey’s Trump fans

In the eyes of his sympathizers, U.S. President Donald Trump is always great. Whatever he does, he never looks ugly to them. He may have unsettled the entire world, but Trump fans here in Turkey are still rejoicing. You can never hear them questioning the kind of disaster Trump’s presidency is. 

Just yesterday they were in favor of an “independent foreign policy.” Once upon a time they were nationalist and anti-American. Now they are Trump fanatics. 

Is it because Trump has stripped the U.S. of its “superior mind” (üst akıl) and saved us from its games? Is it because he has downgraded the “superior mind” to a mediocre mind? Is it because he has ended the American dream?  

No, it is none of these. They love Trump because they find him more suitable in the “savior” role that Barack Obama rejected.  

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is uncomfortable about Trump’s preparations in the Middle East. He has expressed cautious optimism about the new president. 

But the Trump lovers in our country are relaxed and content. The entire world may be on a knife-edge because Trump is in the White House, but they are in a blind love.

They are not irritated by the supply of armored vehicles to the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD). The U.S. continues to supply arms to what we call terrorists, but this has not shaken Turkish Trump fans’ trust in the new administration. 

The new U.S. administration only sees the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) as a terrorist organization, while winking at Bashar al-Assad. It is rumored that when the new administration mentions “safe zones” in Syria it really means “PKK cantons.” But still nothing can weaken the loyalty to Trump. 
Trump has elevated racism to another level. He is keeping his campaign promises on the subject of Muslim hatred. He has closed doors. He is continuing with hate speech, discrimination and bigotry. 

The whole world is panicking about his administration but our Trump lovers do not care. They will be wasted on the road of whitewashing Trump’s Islamophobia. 

A Chinese military official recently said war was “practically possible” with Trump as president. Mikhail Gorbachev has said it looks like the world is preparing for war. But the Trump-lovers in Turkey are still arguing that Trump is the last hope for the world. 

Trump’s own states in the U.S. have united and are rebelling. European protesters are rebelling. But the guys here are still applauding Trump. 

They have also been fond of Putin like this, defending him at every opportunity. Today, they cannot find any words to say against Russia’s suggestion of founding an Autonomous Kurdish Region in Syria. 

There is a huge defensive block here in favor of Trump. Many of his American fans may have woken up, but our local lovers are still dreaming that “Trump will come and our troubles will go away.” 

They define themselves as supporters of an “independent foreign policy.” They have rejected all the best leaders who have come along, and now it is Trump who they trust. 

Their rage against Obama is simply because of the fact he did not step in to save us from the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and al-Assad. But just like Putin, Trump also sees no other terrorist organizations in Syria other than ISIL. 

What has changed? Why have the determined anti-Americanists transformed into pro-Trumpists? 

I cannot understand it. What are they trying to do? What are they going through?
