One soldier killed in PKK attack on civilian vehicle

A sergeant major died and a civilian officer was wounded in an armed attack by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the southeastern province of Mardin’s Nusaybin district Monday.
Mardin Gov. Turhan Ayvaz said the armed attack happened while the sergeants were in a vehicle. Sgt. Oktay Aydoğan died and civil servant Rıfat Un was injured. Un was being treated in Nusaybin State Hospital.
Ayvaz said the Turkish armed forces had begun an operation in the region.
Meanwhile, Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek sent a condolence message about Aydoğan to Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel. Aydoğan was reported to have been married and have had two children. His memorial ceremony will be held today in Ankara.
Aydoğan’s family and their neighbors hung Turkish flags on their houses, the Anatolia news agency reported.
