A mosaic with four human figures has been unearthed in the southern province of Mersin’s Tarsus district, shortly after a mosaic from the second or third century was discovered during the construction of a district bazaar area. The construction work was halted after the discovery of the first mosaic a few days ago, and scientific excavations were started in the area.
From the Roman period
Museums officials estimated that the recently found mosaic dated back to the Roman period. The ground mosaic covers an area of 32 square meters. “After we discovered the first mosaic, we extended the area of excavations and found another mosaic with four human figures in it, but it is a bit damaged. We think that it is from the Roman period,” an official said.
