Municipality angers animal lovers
EDİRNE - Doğan News Agency
Animal rights activists in the northwestern province of Edirne claim that they have found bodies in a waste yard in the downtown area and held the municipality responsible. The Animal Rights Federation (HAYTAP) issued a press release saying activists in the city claimed that the strays had been poisoned by the İbriktepe Municipality and buried there.
The prosecution office of İpsala launched excavation work yesterday following the claims.
“We found the bodies of five dogs during the excavations, with the attendance of the gendarmerie, and filed a criminal complaint against the İbriktepe Municipality,” said Tülay Kahveci, animal rights activist.
Nevertheless, the Mayor of İbriktepe, Galip Gören, has denied the charges.
“There is no killing, animals died naturally due to contagious mange and the municipality workers buried them to stop the disease spreading among other animals.”
