One municipality worker died and three were wounded after a car crashed, triggering a chain of accidents while workers were performing maintenance on a road in Istanbul’s Zeytinburnu district.Municipality workers were doing roadwork on E-5 highway on Tuesday night when a car crashed into a truck that then ran into the workers’ vehicle, which then crashed into the road workers.
After being hit by an unidentified car, Mehmet Nedim Temur, the truck’s driver, lost control of his truck and crashed into the municipality’s sanding vehicle that then hit workers, Doğan News Agency reported. The car driver, who allegedly caused the crash, ran away. Police have started an investigation to find the driver.
Naif Sönmez, who works at a subcontractor firm for the municipality, died at the scene of the accident. Two workers from the firm and the truck’s driver were wounded. The driver’s health was reported to be good while the workers were still in serious condition.
“The municipality has to put a warning sign 150 meters ahead of the roadwork and work with a beacon lamp,” İlker Aydın, an engineer who works at Beyoğlu Municipality’s road maintenance service, told the Hürriyet Daily News.
“We have taken all the necessary precautions to protect our workers from accidents,” Cengiz Öztürk, an official from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality press information office service, told the Daily News. He did not give the subcontractor firm’s name.
