Leading Turkish businesswoman gets Responsible Capitalism Award in UK

A top Turkish businesswoman has been honored with an award on responsible capitalism in the United Kingdom.
Güler Sabancı — who chairs Sabancı Holding, Turkey’s second-largest conglomerate — received the Award for Responsible Capitalism 2017 by FIRST, a U.K.-based organization, the holding announced on May 13.
The award was presented to Sabancı on May 11 by Lord Judge, the former lord chief justice Igor Judge, in London’s House of Lords. She is the first Turk to receive the title, according to the holding.
The Award for Responsible Capitalism began in 2000 to honor business leaders who excel in both commercial success and social responsibility, according to the award’s website.
The concept of the award is based on the belief that whilst commercial success can be measured in terms of standard criteria, social responsibility involves a far greater sense of the needs of the wider community, in the areas in which the business operates, as well as environmental initiatives and support for the arts and culture, according to the award’s website.
Last fall, Forbes magazine made Sabancı number 58 on its list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women — the only Turk on the list.
Sabancı is the first woman to run Sabancı Holding, whose holdings include banking, energy, retail and insurance. She is also founding president of Sabancı University and chair of the Sabancı Foundation, Turkey’s largest private charity.
